George Potts

George William Potts, 90, of Springdale, died March 7, 2008 at Westwood Health and Rehab. He was born August 16, 1917 in Muskegon, MI, and moved to Virden, IL, at age 8. He graduated Virden High School in 1938. Mr. Potts entered the US Army in 1940 and rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer serving with the 96th Infantry Division in the Philippines and Okinawa. He married Vivian Finney on July 4, 1942. He was active in Laurel Methodist Church in Springfield, IL, serving as treasurer and usher. In 1958, the family moved to Fort Worth, TX, where Mr. Potts was active in Westcliff United Methodist Church. He was a sales representative for Dutch Boy, US Gypsum, and O'Brien Paint Companies, retiring from Dal-Worth Paint, a subsidiary of Benjamin Moore. He was a voracious reader, especially about the Civil War. He was a committed volunteer who served as a reading tutor, a guide at the Soviet Space exhibit and the US Treasury in Fort Worth. He organized and maintained the library at the Gardens at Arkanshire of Springdale, where he and Vivian resided until November 2007. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Springdale. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mabel Potts and sister, Carolyn. Mr. Potts is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vivian Finney Potts of Springdale; a son, David E. Potts and wife Paula, of Arlington, VA; a daughter, Judy Stafford Van Hoose and husband Jerre, of Springdale; AR. He is also survived by grandsons, Neil Stafford (Jodie) of Fayetteville, AR; Mike Stafford of Sacramento, CA; Greg Potts of Washington, DC; J. Max Van Hoose (Kelley) of Springdale; Jill Green (Gary) of Franklin, TN; and Justin Van Hoose (Laurelin) of Oak Harbor, WA. Great-grandchildren are: Jeremy, JD, Josh, and Thatcher Stafford of Fayetteville AR; Madeline and Linden Van Hoose of Springdale AR; and Claire, Millie, and Clark Green, of Franklin, TN. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at First United Methodist Church, 206 W.
