Nelse and I went through the Kennewick school system together, and in the 5th and 6th grades we were best friends, inseparable at school and often visiting at each other's houses. We graduated together and then by chance met up again at University of Washington, where I recognized him from across the quad and hailed him as an old friend from our home town. We sat and talked for an hour. I never saw him again, but I've always carried him in my heart as one of the best, kindest, and most fun friends I have ever had. I know his sister Pam and his brothers Marty and Danny, and to all of you, I'm very, very sorry for your loss. To me, Nelse will always be a wonderful friend and a model of what a straight-up, strong, honest, and true man should be. The world is diminished by his passing. Bless you, Nelse; I'll miss you always. Robert Stafford
